Keywords for Social Media Using Google Trends

Learn what keywords people are searching right now

Google Trends - Be in the know - santosha solutions

When you are trying to find that one thing that will get your content noticed, like the right keywords, it can be hard to see the needle in the haystack..if there is really a needle at all.

There isn’t just “one thing” that will make your content visible and evoke lots of engagement. It is a combination of various efforts on a consistent basis that will help your content be seen. Keywords are a good start.

What are keywords?

Keywords are words or phrases that have a high frequency of search.

Keywords and their importance are often discussed surrounding SEO or search engine optimization. SEO is important for your website, but did you know it is also important for all your online digital content?  This can be social media, website, reels or Tik Toks, and even youtube.

So how do you find the right keywords?

There are several online tools that are available to help you find trending topics, Google “keyword search tools”. Google has a free platform called Trends that allows you to see what is trending within a period of time. Based on the results, find topics or key phrases that are generating a lot of interest. Use appropriate ones in your content to boost your visibility.

Go to https://trends.google.com/. Type in a phrase or set of keywords that apply to your industry.  As an example, I entered ‘social media marketing’. You can narrow or expand the search for the geographical area, time frame, category, and type of search.

Topics vs Queries

  • Topics are what people searched in addition to your search term.
  • Queries are results that were shown for the search term.

I searched ‘social media marketing’ and based on that search, Google Trends shows people also searched: course, strategy, and small business.

When I make a social media post using these keywords an topics, I would write out in the text or say in a video “as a small business, it is important to have a solid strategy for your social media marketing.”

If I dig deeper and click on ‘small business’, there are related topics and related queries that I can also use to help further improve the likelihood that my post, blog, or video will get seem more. There are related queries under the ‘social media marketing’ search as well, in this scenario, however, they aren’t as interesting to use. These are more redundant terms or phrases.

Use trending topics and keywords to your advantage

Have you ever noticed on some social posts or on Tik Tok there will be hashtags that appear to not be related to the post content at all?  This is because people are attempting to be seen via a trending topic. You can see what is trending by clicking on Trending Searches. (If nothing shows up, go up to the small arrow and pick a country.)

According to Google, these daily search trends are highlighted because of an increase in searches over the past 24 hours. You will see the specific queries and the total number of searches.

In this scenario, if I wanted to try and piggyback off one of these trends, I would want to include these words (not all at once) in the content.

Using keywords or searched topics from Google Trends is not a guarantee that your content will be viewed more than it would have without the keywords. Factors like your overall ranking in search, your viewership on social platforms, algorithms, and other factors also have a role. However, improve your chances of having people see your content and rank higher in Google searches by understanding what people are searching. Then use those same search terms in your content.

Happy marketing!
