Business Growth Starts with Mindset: Get Out of Your Own Way

Have you ever reached a crossroads in your business or personal growth? You are doing all the right things. You read all the books. You bought the training course…and yet…none of it is producing the results.

You want success. You know the goal. You might even have a plan. So what is holding you back from finding that success and reaching your goal?

Lack of knowledge isn’t the issue. There are plenty of self-help books, blogs, videos, coaches, and even great friends to help us with what we need and should be doing to find the growth we seek. Sometimes the biggest stumbling block isn’t knowledge, it is us.

The secret? Get out of your own head.

Let me explain.

Back in 2010, before I became a digital marketing coach, I decided to follow my passion and get my yoga teaching certification. During my yoga teacher training, each trainee had to memorize a set dialogue for each posture. In the particular style of yoga I was training for, this was a requirement; we all had to say the same words. We worked together in small groups, sitting on the floor, taking turns reciting the dialogue aloud. Some of the trainees recited the words well, as if they had been saying them all their lives. Most of us, including me, sounded like typewriters. And some unfortunate souls froze up completely. There were all kinds of reasons, but in the end, none of those mattered.

One guy struggled so much; the lead teachers had him stand on one foot and recite the words in an English accent. We felt so bad for him, you could tell from his demeanor he was embarrassed. It was painful to watch. But something amazing happened, he was able to recite the dialogue! The words started to flow out of his brain and through his mouth.

And why was that? How did he do it?

Because he got out of his own head. In that moment, his focus shifted. He was no longer focused on his excuses for why he couldn’t do it. He wasn’t worried about his preconceived ideas about the process. He wasn’t worried about getting the words perfect. He wasn’t even worried about looking foolish. He was too busy trying to balance, too busy focusing on the challenge…too busy to be in his own head.

We can sign up for the training, workshop, or course. We can read all the books and even hire a coach to help us create a strategy for success. But until we are ready to let go of our own fears, our own perceptions, and our own excuses, we are unable to move past the stumbling block to the other side; we will remain stuck.

So if you’re feeling stuck, remember this:

It may not be about doing more.

It might be about thinking differently.

If you want help working through the shift, let’s chat. Sometimes a conversation is all it takes to pivot perspectives and get out of your own head.

Don’t let you get in the way of you!
